In easy words, a podcast is a program made available in digital format for download over the Internet.
It can also be explained as a broadcast that is placed on the Internet for an audience.
We can also say that a podcast is usually a radio program that is stored in a digital form and can be downloaded from the internet to play on a computer or on a mobile phone.
Podcast can be considered as a radio show – but on the Internet.
Technically speaking, a podcast is an audio series divided into multiple episodes that can downloaded as media files.
Origin of the term ‘Podcast’
Podcast is a portmanteau of the words ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’ (radio or TV transmission). It is popularly believed that the term was born in the USA in 2004 when iPod was the most popular ‘mp3 player’ there.
Ben Hammersley (a British broadcaster and systems developer) is believed to be the one who coined it in early February 2004.
