A Transmasculine person is someone who is transgender in the direction of masculinity, but not necessarily male. Often shortened to 'transmasc', the term transmasculine can refer to both transgender men and nonbinary people.

Let's explain it a bit further: if a person is (to be) transmasculine, it means that his/her/their true self is more aligned with masculinity than is represented by the gender that was assigned to them when they were born. Typically, this means that most transmasculine people were assigned the female gender at their birth, and they have moved away from that 'incorrect assignment' towards masculinity.

Transmasculine people may or may not pursue surgical procedure and hormone therapies that help them to present themselves in a more masculine way.

If we summarize the whole thing: transmasculine indicates or describes transgender people who were assigned female at birth, but identify with masculinity rather than with femininity. Transmasculine people usually try to appear stereotypically masculine in terms of their gender expression with a view to create social recognition of their dominant male identity.

Transmasculine typically include the following genders:

  • Trans men
  • Demiguys
  • Multigender (person or people who's strongest gender identity is a masculine one)
  • Gender fluid (person or people who are, most often, masculine)
  • Any other non-binary gender (person or people who view themselves as significantly masculine)

The feminine equivalent of transmasculine is 'Transfeminine' (often shortened as 'transfemme') - which means a person was assigned male at birth but identifies as a female.
