Community journalism is a branch of journalism that focuses on covering local events and issues that concern a specific community.

Wikipedia defines community journalism as "locally-oriented, professional news coverage that typically focuses on city neighborhoods, individual suburbs or small towns, rather than metropolitan, state, national or world news."

It is the duty of the media industry to provide a platform for the common people to voice their concerns and bring attention to those issues. But, often the mainstream media organizations overlook those issues concerning the residents of small communities. This is where the role of community journalism becomes really significant.

Usually, smaller-scale media organizations that are basically established in particular localities and run by local journalists are the ones who provide the platform for community journalism. In this digital age, social media platforms can be used as tools and platforms for community journalism.

Community journalism serves a critical role in keeping residents of a particular community informed about the events and issues in their neighborhoods, cities, and towns. It also provides a platform for the residents to express their concerns, opinions, expectations, and attract the attention of the larger i.e. mainstream media organizations as well as the policy makers.
